30 Days Out, July 2026 #1: Joe Medwick, Of Montreal, Get Right Band, Band of Horses
Two local/regional acts, two nationally-touring. Those are the highest of the highlights of live music in and around Asheville in the coming thirty days. And here we go!

Here in WNC, Joe Medwick might be thought of as a prominent musician, band leader and promoter. But Medwick’s CV is an impressive one, including work with some of the brightest stars in North American roots music. He’s worked with Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of The Band, and with Paul Barrere of Little Feat, just to name three. And this event pays tribute to those two bands, with music performed by Medwick and his Asheville All-star Band plus guests.

One of the most commercially successful exponents of the Athens GA-based Elephant 6 Collective, Of Montreal has a well-deserved reputation for powerful live performances. Kevin Barnes‘ group is also one of the most prolific acts out of the collective, with 20(!) studio albums to date (not to mention numerous compilations, EPs and singles). Their latest is 2026’s aethermead. I interivewed Barnes a decade ago. CorMae opens.

“Psychedelic indie rock” is a fairly apt description for what this Asheville-based trio does, but in truth it barely scratches the surface of their finely textured, complex yet grooving and accessible music. Four albums in, they continue to push forward. This show is a combination listening part for their latest album and a live set showcasing those and other songs. The Get Right Band is very good live. I’ve interviewed them multiple times: here and here will get you started.

Songwriter Ben Bridwell launched Band of Horses in 2004; through myriad lineup changes, he has remained as the group’s sole constant. For many years the band has an Asheville connection: guitarist Tyler Ramsay was a member for a decade until 2017. The lineup that made the band’s most recent album, 2022’s critically-lauded Things Are Great, is largely intact today. Dinosaur Jr. is also on the bill, making this effectively a double-header.
