30 Days Out, Nov. 2022 #1: GY!BE, Funk You, Zoe & Cloyd, Ty Segall

Two nationally-touring acts, a regional one and a local group are featured in the first of two “30 Days Out” installments this month. There’s avant-garde/post-rock, soulful funk, heartfelt Americana and a punk/garage icon taking things somewhere different. The hills mountains are truly alive with the sound of music.

Artist: Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Venue: The Orange Peel
Date: Friday, Nov. 11, 8 p.m.
Door: $35
What exactly is post-rock? Nobody knows for sure, but it’s a safe bet that the brooding, dense music of Godspeed You! Black Emperor earns that epithet. With a sound that draws from minimalism as well as Glenn Branca’s noisefests, they’re like nothing else. Inscrutable, too, as I pointed out nearly a decade ago. Asheville’s own avant garde duo Manas opens; amusingly enough, in a review some four years ago of an album featuring one of that outfit’s members, I actually referenced GY!BE. This Orange Peel bill is an inspired pairing.

Artist: Funk You
Venue: Salvage Station
Date: Friday, Nov. 11, 8 p.m.
Door: $20 advance / $25 day of show
This nine-piece band truly brings the funk. Based out of Augusta, Georgia, they conjure the spirit of hometown hero James Brown – horns and all – imbuing it with a current-day jam band vibe. Their latest album, Moving Forward was released mere weeks ago. The always-excellent Southern Avenue opens.

Artist: Zoe & Cloyd
Venue: Isis Music Hall
Date: Saturday, Nov. 12, 8:30 p.m.
Door: $20
This compelling wife-and-husband duo makes music for the head and the heart; their music is rich and melodic, and their lyrics stand up to close attention. They’re one of Western North Carolina’s finest purveyors of authentic, inspired modern folk. Read more about ‘em here, and follow even more links therein.

Artist: Ty Segall
Venue: The Grey Eagle
Date: Friday, Nov. 18, 9 p.m.
Door: $22
Segall is best known as a modern-day hero of the punk/garage movement, but for this tour he’s playing solo, on acoustic guitar. Should be interesting nonetheless.

See you at the shows!
