30 Days Out, May 2025 #2: Pleasure Chest, Drivin N Cryin, Lord Huron, Wolfmother
Rock, rock, folk-rock and more rock: whether local acts or touring bands, it’s a rocking May and June here in Asheville. Go see some live music.
Artist: Pleasure Chest
Venue: Highland Brewing
Date: Saturday, May 30, 6 p.m.
Door: $free
I’ve said it many times before, and I’ll say it yet again: These guys rock hard, bringing forth the spirit of early rock’n’roll, the kind of thing you’d find on the Loud, Fast and Out of Control boxed set. No soppy balladry here. Guitarist Erich Hubner – he of the wild-looking guitars – used to be in Man… Or Astro-Man? And that should tell you something. What’s that something? Go see ‘em. It’s free, even! (Tips welcome and encouraged.)
Artist: Drivin N Cryin
Venue: Grey Eagle
Date: Friday, June 12, 8 p.m.
Door: $26.86
Atlanta-based Kevn Kinney is one of rock’s finest songwriters, and his band – which has been around forever – is always rocking. I interviewed Kinney back in 2015, and the conversation yielded several features.
Artist: Lord Huron
Venue: Explore Asheville Arena
Date: Sunday, June 14, 8 p.m.
Door: $74.50+
The name might make you think this band is form the Great Lakes region. Nope; this indie quartet is from L.A. Their indie-folk sound may remind some of My Morning Jacket or Fleet Foxes. Their biggest success to date came with their second album, 2015’s Platinum-selling Strange Trails. Lord Huron’s most recent release, The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1 was released in 2025; it missed topping the U.S. Folk charts by only one spot (three previous albums made it to No. 1). Thao opens.
Artist: Wolfmother
Venue: Orange Peel
Date: Monday, June 15, 8 p.m.
Door: $45.85
You can consider yourself forgiven if your response to seeing a Wolfmother concert date was something along the lines of, “I didn’t know they were still a thing.” The Australian power trio’s peak popularity came right about two decades ago. Today only leader-singer-guitarist Andrew Stockdale remains from the original lineup; current bassist James Wassenaar is the (check notes) seventh musician to hold that role. Drummer Christian Condon has eight predecessors. That said, the sound remains the same: a powerful, delightfully retro one. Made with an earlier rhythm section, 2021’s self-released Rock Out is their latest. Love Gang opens.
See you at the show!
