30 Days Out, May 2024 #1: Eric Slick, Carpal Tullar, Cypress Hill, Real Estate

What an impressive lineup of touring (and local) acts on the calendar over the next 30 days in Asheville. Even with everything going on in the world, what a great time to be alive, and to take in some live music.

Artist: Eric Slick
Venue: Grey Eagle
Date: Wednesday, May 8, 8 p.m.
Door: $15
Eric Slick is a force to be reckoned with. Formerly the drummer with Dr. Dog, he’s also played with Adrian Belew and his sister Julie Slick. He’s a first-rate artist who plays all manner of instruments, too. He lived in Asheville for awhile, so he has a local connection. But you should see him regardless. I reviewed a reissue of his 2017 album here. Scott McMicken opens.

Artist: Carpal Tullar
Venue: The Outpost
Date: Saturday, May 11, 8 p.m.
Door: $10
For some time, Chris Tullar worked alone, primarily as a studio project. But for some years now he has enlisted some of the best local players – all of whom I know, some of whom I’ve even played with – to share his tuneful and delightfully idiosyncratic music with live audiences. I reviewed his 2017 album here. Miami Gold – who are also quite good – open.

Artist: Cypress Hill
Venue: Salvage Station
Date: Sunday, May 12, 6:30 p.m.
Door: SOLD OUT
Hip-hop concerts are a relative rarity in Asheville. So when we get one of any sort it’s noteworthy. But when it’s Cypress Hill – one of the highest profile acts in the style, touring with most of its classic lineup – it’s a don’t-miss proposition. That said, if you don’t already have tix, you’re likely outta luck, as it’s sold out. Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief are also on the bill.

Artist: Real Estate
Venue: Orange Peel
Date: Friday, May 24, 8 p.m.
Door: $25
This indie rock group from New Jersey has been around since 2008, releasing music on the highly-regarded Mexican Summer and Woodsist labels (among others). Their latest album, Daniel, was produced by Daniel Tashian, son of Barry (of the legendary Remains), and they scored a spot on Elton John’s podcast to promote it. Nice going, guys!

See you at the show!
