Bonus Single Review: Schizo Fun Addict – “Pasteline Dream” b/w “Fate Reprise”
Regular readers of Musoscribe may know that I posted seven days a week for a few years before going back to my original five-a-week, business-days-only posting regimen. They may also know that I very very rarely review singles.
Well, here I am breaking both rules. I enthusiastically reviewed a single by Schizo Fun Addict back in January 2025, and so when I received their latest, I gave it a listen and I dig it, so here’s a brief review…
At first glance, I read the title’s first word as “Palestine.” And I thought, “Hmmm.” Looking again, I sorted it out. But what matters is the sound. Imagine Brian Jones Massacre with a chirpy female vocalist and you’ll be on the right track. Jangling, shimmering guitars over a gauzy, reverbed arrangement with disorienting splashes of spoken word and whooshing, dive-bombing synthesizer flourishes (or maybe guitars; I can’t be sure). It’s a catchy tune with production to match.
The flip, “Fate Reprise” is an instrumental bearing hints of both Summer of Love and ‘80s Paisley Underground character. The intentionally blurry aesthetic is a choice I might not have made, but the melodic guitar lines and plinking piano figures punch through the gauze. Ultimately, it sounds like the B-side it is, but it’s a catchy one that may well lodge itself in the listener’s brain.
