The next 30 days in Asheville live music are filled with gems. Athens alt-rock, \u201890s pop, and tributes to the king of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll and one of rock\u2019s best and most enduring artists: Asheville has it all. Off we go!<\/p>\n

\nFive Eight were among the remarkably creative clutch of bands that cameo ut of Athens. The group came along well after that early wave that brought us B-52\u2019s, R.E.M, Mercyland and a bunch of others, but they found a good bit of well-deserved success. Thirty-plus after their debut, Five-Eight is now the subject of a new documentary, Weirdo<\/i>. That film will be screened at this date, an evening that also includes as set by Asheville\u2019s own Pinkeye, who are performing in support of their new album Better Stay Clear!<\/i><\/p>\n

\nRemember \u201cKiss Me\u201d from 1997? Sure you do. Sweet song. Great arrangement, nice production. That was Sixpence None the Richer, and they had other good original songs, too (though the Crowded House and La\u2019s covers were arguably unnecessary). Strangely enough, the self-titled album that yielded \u201cKiss Me\u201d earned a Grammy nomination for, um, Best Gospel Album. The current quartet features two original members (including singer Leigh Nash), and two members who were on board for that hit \u201887 album. In other words, the real deal.<\/p>\n

\nDate<\/b>: Saturday, Aug. 30, 7 p.m.
\nDoor<\/b>: $40-70
\nYou need not travel to Las Vegas (or, um, Branson<\/a>) to witness a quality musical tribute to Elvis Presley. From the images I\u2019ve seen, this production leans a bit toward the later years, but I expect they\u2019ll work in a good overview of the King\u2019s musical arc. Be sure to shout out a request for \u201c(There\u2019s) No Room to Rhumba in a Sports Car.\u201d<\/p>\n
